Is it Black Magic? Let’s Talk Activated Charcoal.

Is it Black Magic? Let’s Talk Activated Charcoal.

Most people have already seen on various social media outlets the many different products including activated charcoal used by DIY’ers (Do-it-yourself’ers). Most commonly seen are cosmetic face masks and teeth whitening toothpastes and/or scrubs. But, what gives? Does this stuff actually work and, if it does… is it safe!?

Quick Background

The first documented use of Activated Charcoal (or, Activated Carbon) was in 1500 BC by the Egyptians who used it to absorb unpleasant odors and cure intestinal ailments. Pepto Bismol® did not exist, but charcoal seemed to work just fine for that upset stomach.

Fast forward a few centuries and you will now find Activated Charcoal being used to purify water, treat anemia in cancer patients, remove toxins from within the body of overdose and/or snake bite victims and, of course, deep-cleaning facial pores and removing stains from teeth!

It is a simple concept. Make your teeth black to make them white!

So, What the Heck Is It?

Activated Charcoal, not to be confused with the briquettes Dad used on the grill, is 100% alkaline – full of electrons (remember this from Chemistry class?) carrying a negative charge.

It is typically formed by charring Willow Bark while subjecting it to some sort of oxidizing gas, like air or steam, at high temps. This increases the “absorbability’ of the material.

Toxins inside your body and stains? You guessed it. They put off a positive charge which makes them want to cling to negatively charged things. Things like… YES, Activated Charcoal! It binds other substances to its own surface while the charcoal itself is not absorbed in the body.

Cosmetic "Mud" Masks with Activated Charcoal have been shown to deep-cleanse pores and remove blackheads.
